The day started with nothing but blue skies as the final finishing touches were placed on the centerpieces and place settings were carefully put in order. Not a cloud in the sky. In the main house at the Montague Inn in Saginaw Michigan, the hair stylist and makeup artist prepared the bride for the day. A family friend stopped up into the room to sew a blue heart made from the sweater of the bride’s grandmother onto her wedding dress. A token to the legacy her grandmother left behind. The bridesmaids shared a special book full of stories and pictures of the times they spent together to this point.
Down below in the carriage house, the unmistakable sound of a very loud car could be heard coming from a mile away. Maybe two miles. The groom, a car aficionado, invited his groomsmen to bring their cool cars to the wedding. When they were all lined up it became difficult to tell if this was a wedding or a car show. The groomsmen loitered around open hoods talking about aftermarket parts before the the 3.7 minutes it would take to put on their suits.
The sky became more ominous as the dark thunder clouds started to roll in. The father of the bride looked at the weather radar on his phone fully convinced that it would blow over in a matter of time and the outdoor ceremony wouldn’t be a problem. A man full of wonderful optimism.
The rain came. Torrential style rains. Earlier in the week it rained so hard some regions near by contended with flooding. The rain turned to hail and the reception tent billowed in the wind. The original plan for the day called for an outdoor ceremony in the garden. The rain let up long enough to clean the seats, but then started again. The levels of hope for an outdoor ceremony dipped a bit, but once again, the weather broke and the chairs were dried cleaned again. If a baseball game is worth waiting for when there is a rain delay, there is certainly nothing wrong with pushing the start time of a wedding back 30 minutes.
The groom teared up at the sight of his bride walking with her dad toward him. A small bit of water still drizzling from the trees christened the bride and groom as they exchanged vows and rings in what proved to be a brief but sufficient ceremony. Rain on one’s wedding day is said to be auspicious in some cultures. If that’s the case, these two are assured marital bliss.
Into the evening, the sun poked around the corner of the clouds and the festivities continued late into the evening. By the end of the night, the stars came out overhead any complaint of the downpour earlier simply got wrapped up into the story of the day. A truly beautiful day.
